About this Episode

Opening Song:

The Day of the Lord (Psalm 37) by Wendell Kimbrough

O Lord, open our lips and our mouths will declare Your praise.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end,

Amen.

The Scripture for today is Psalm 37:8-17.

Let’s prepare our hearts to hear from God’s word as we listen to The Day of the Lord (Psalm 37) by Wendell Kimbrough. The earnest vocals, hints of tambourine, and instrumentation lend a ballad-like nature to this song. Repetition of the text reminds us to hold on because “it’s not long ‘til the Day of the Lord.”

Lyrics:

It’s not long ’til the boastful

Are silenced and shamed

It’s not long ’til the wealth

Of the wicked’s reclaimed

And the ones who have waited

With eyes on the Lord

Will shine like the sun forevermore

It’s not long ’til the Day of the Lord

Just be still and be faithful

And dwell in the land

Put your trust in the Savior

And cling to his hand

When your heart burns with anger

For all that is wrong

Do not let the dark steal your song

It’s not long ’til the Day of the Lord

It’s not long till the Day of the Lord

It’s not long till the Day of the Lord

Everything that is broken will soon be restored

It’s not long till the Day of the Lord

Do not fear for the wicked

With weapons of war

For the Lord is the shelter

And strength of the poor

And our God comes with laughter

Let him be your joy

The power of the sword he’ll destroy

It’s not long till the Day of the Lord

Passage:

8   Refrain from anger, and forsake wrath!

Fret not yourself; it tends only to evil.

9 For the evildoers shall be cut off,

but those who wait for the LORD shall inherit the land.

10 In just a little while, the wicked will be no more;

though you look carefully at his place, he will not be there.

11 But the meek shall inherit the land

and delight themselves in abundant peace.

12 The wicked plots against the righteous

and gnashes his teeth at him,

13 but the Lord laughs at the wicked,

for he sees that his day is coming.

14 The wicked draw the sword and bend their bows

to bring down the poor and needy,

to slay those whose way is upright;

15 their sword shall enter their own heart,

and their bows shall be broken.

16 Better is the little that the righteous has

than the abundance of many wicked.

17 For the arms of the wicked shall be broken,

but the LORD upholds the righteous.

(Psalm 37:8–17 ESV)

Musical Reflection:

“Amazing Grace,” Appalachian folk tune

Reflection Notes:

This beloved tune, formally known as NEW BRITAIN, originates from the folk music of Appalachia. The melody is simple and outlines triads, making it memorable; the ascending line creates a triumphant climax.

Prayer:

Most loving Father, whose will it is for us to give thanks for all things, to fear nothing but the loss of you, and to cast all our care on you who care for us: Preserve us from faithless fears and worldly anxieties, that no clouds of this mortal life may hide from us the light of that love which is immortal, and which you have manifested to us in your Son Jesus Christ our Lord; who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
