About this Episode

Opening Song:

Psalm 89 by Poor Bishop Hooper

Lyrics:

i will sing of your steadfast love

forever forever

young and old they will all hear of

forever forever

unfailing love and faithfulness

forever forever

enduring as the heavens

forever forever

you have said of your chosen one

forever forever

to your servant david sworn

forever forever

i will make your sons as kings

forever forever

they will have the throne for eternity

forever forever

the north the south you created them

forever forever

and you hold it all in your strong right hand

forever forever

righteousness and justice

forever forever

are the foundation where your throne sits

forever

and to the godly ones you spoke of old

forever forever

it is david i have exalted

forever forever

with my holy oil i anointed him

forever forever

so that my hand can be established

forever forever

oh lord how long will this go on

forever forever

oh lord how long will your anger burn

forever forever

where’s your steadfast love of old

forever forever

the love you swore to david’s own

forever forever

Passage:

20 I have found David, my servant;

with my holy oil I have anointed him,

21 so that my hand shall be established with him;

my arm also shall strengthen him.

22 The enemy shall not outwit him;

the wicked shall not humble him.

23 I will crush his foes before him

and strike down those who hate him.

24 My faithfulness and my steadfast love shall be with him,

and in my name shall his horn be exalted.

25 I will set his hand on the sea

and his right hand on the rivers.

26 He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father,

my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’

27 And I will make him the firstborn,

the highest of the kings of the earth.

28 My steadfast love I will keep for him forever,

and my covenant will stand firm for him.

29 I will establish his offspring forever

and his throne as the days of the heavens.

(Psalm 89:20–29 ESV)

Musical Reflection:

O Lord, Hear My Prayer by Jacques Berthier

Reflection Notes:

This song from the Taizé community contains a series of pleas: “O Lord, hear my prayer, O Lord, hear my prayer; when I call, answer me.” The repeated notes emphasize the insistence of the sung prayer, while the descending lines indicate a deep, almost despairing desire to connect.

Prayer:

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when night comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
